| Range : | telefominensis | - Telefomin, Papua New Guinea & Pass Valley, Irian Jaya |
| Notes : |
| This species was once considered to be a subspecies of Delias
callima, but has now been given specific status. This is due to the
female, which differs considerably from the female of D. callima. The specimen shown above is very interesting and could be a new subspecies as no work has as yet been undertaken to examine its structure. It was collected from Pass Valley, near Wamena in Irian Jaya, the other side of the border from Telefomin. The distance between the two areas, however, is not enormous, but on New Guinea, that does not necessarily mean they are the same species, as the island is covered with deep gorges which prevent the movement of butterflies from one area to another. The black margins on the forewings are considerably reduced, and also in the maculation. To add further confusion, some entomologists consider D.telefominensis to be a synonym of D.callima satura. |
