Butterflies of Sumatra |
| A huge island, dominated, on the southern part, by the mountain
range of the Pegunungan Barisian. This island is considerably more
forested than neighbouring Java, and most of the species and subspecies
found here are endemic to the Island. The surrounding islands also
generally have their own endemic subspecies.
Although the Equator is a purely human invention, it is surprising how many subspecies seem to be only found either to the north or to the south, with only a small cross-over area. Click on the area of the map you are interested in, or use the sub-page titles to the right of the map. |
